Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to Ethoterra! Below, you’ll find answers to common questions about our plant-based leather accessories, sustainability efforts, and our upcoming eco-friendly marketplace. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact us—we’re happy to help!
What materials do you use for your plant-based leather? +
Our accessories are crafted from Appleskin, UPPEAL, and Leaf Leather, with plans to expand to Mirum, Piñatex, cactus, grape, and banana leather in the future. Each material is chosen for its durability, sustainability, and unique aesthetic.
How durable is your plant-based leather compared to traditional leather or synthetic alternatives? +
Our plant-based leather is comparable in durability to high-quality synthetic vegan leathers. While each material has its own properties, we prioritize using minimal synthetic additives to ensure maximum longevity without compromising sustainability.
Is your plant-based leather water-resistant or waterproof? How should I care for it? +
Our plant-based leather is highly water-resistant, making it perfect for everyday use and safe in splash-prone zones. However, it’s not fully waterproof. To care for your accessories:
- Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
What makes your plant-based leather more sustainable than traditional leather or petroleum-based vegan leather? +
Our materials use a thin layer of water-based PU coating, a more sustainable alternative to traditional vegan leather, which is often plastic-based with heavy chemical binding agents. Since they’re made from renewable plant waste and water-based binders (instead of fossil-fuel-based ingredients), they produce significantly less carbon dioxide during production than animal leather or petroleum-based synthetics.
Do you have any certifications? +
Yes! All our products are:
- PETA-approved and vegan.
- Our vendors hold various certifications, including fair trade where possible. Some partners may not have formal certifications but are deeply committed to safe work environments, fair wages, and equal opportunity.
How do you ensure ethical manufacturing practices in your supply chain? +
I personally connect with every vendor in our supply chain to review their certifications, labor practices, and sustainability efforts. If I can’t confidently confirm a product is ethically and sustainably made, we don’t carry it.
When is the marketplace officially launching? +
We’re aiming for 2027/2028—good things take time, and we want to build something thoughtful, ethical, and impactful!

We welcome sustainable and ethical brands, designers, and artisans selling stylish products! We’re starting with fashion and accessories (our area of expertise) but hope to expand to beauty, home goods, and more over time.

What’s your return and exchange policy? +

How do you handle damaged or defective products? +
If your product arrives damaged or defective, email us with a photo, and we’ll happily replace it for you if available!
How do I clean my plant-based leather products? +
Taking care of your accessories is simple! Here’s how to keep them looking fresh:
Regular Care
- Dust your product regularly with a dry microfiber cloth.
- For surface dirt, wipe gently with a soft cloth dampened with warm water.
Deep Clean
- Mix warm water with a tiny amount of mild, plant-based dish soap.
- Dampen a cloth and wipe the surface in circular motions.
- Dry immediately with a clean towel.
Conditioning
- To keep your vegan leather supple, use a vegan leather balm or plant-based care wax.
- Apply a very thin layer with a soft cloth.
What to Avoid
- Harsh chemicals: Never use pure alcohol, acetone, bleach, or standard leather polishes.
- Animal products: Avoid mink oil, nourishing milk, or cleaners made for animal skin.
- Heat: Air-dry indoors—never in direct sunlight or near artificial heat (like a radiator), as this can dry out and crack the material.
How should I store my bags or shoes to prolong their lifespan? +
For AppleSkin Bags:
- Maintain the shape: Lightly stuff the bag with acid-free tissue paper, bubble wrap, or soft clothing to prevent creases and sagging. Avoid newspaper—the ink can transfer!
- Remove and store straps: Unclip long chains or straps and place them inside the bag to prevent metal hardware from scratching the material.
- Store upright: Place structured bags upright on a shelf. Avoid hanging them by their handles for extended periods, as the weight can stretch and distort the shape.
- Control humidity: Add a few silica gel packets near the bags to absorb excess moisture.
For AppleSkin Shoes:
- Use shoe trees: Insert unsealed wooden or specialized plastic shoe trees to absorb moisture and maintain the shoe’s form.
- Give them space: Avoid cramming shoes tightly into dark corners. Let them air out for at least a day after wearing before storing them away.
